CNA Licenses & CEU’s: Continuing Education on A Budget

There are many rewarding elements to the career of professional caregiver. As a Certified Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide or Nurse you will impact the quality of life of the individuals you care for. Many will begin to depend on you to maintain the elements of their lifestyles that they value. In addition, if you choose to partner with nurse registries to obtain your clients then you will enjoy the benefits of a flexible schedule of your choosing.

One of the challenges in the profession you’ve chosen is the upkeep of your education credits. As a self-employed professional you will find that you’re responsible for registering, funding, attending and maintaining the records for the continuing education required by the State of Florida. For licensed individuals the state requires that you obtain 12 hours of ongoing education each year for licensure. While this standard is worthwhile and valuable, it can be a daunting task.

Our credentialing specialists have over the years developed a few tips for aides who need to operate their business on a budget.

  1. Be Strategic – Many caregivers will be registered with multiple companies and while most will require similar trainings there may be slight differences. If Company A requires CPR, HIV and an Alzheimer’s related training and Company B requires CPR, HIV and any training related to depression in seniors then you know you can save money by finding a training on Alzheimer’s patients dealing with depression. One training satisfies the requirements of two different companies.
  2. Stay alert to free trainings – Sometimes senior centers, community centers and public conferences will be held for caregiving. Most are directed at family caregivers, but some will offer free trainings or workshops led by accredited trainers and certificates for attendance issued.
  3. Subscription Services and Packages – There are many online resources that for a flat monthly or yearly rate will allow you to take multiple classes. Sometimes there may be a cap so make sure to read the fine print and decide whether or not the amount offered meets your needs. Training schools may offer packages or seasonal deal on common classes. If you’re nearing renewal go ahead and take advantage of special offers and discounts, even if you’re a month or two early. The special pricing may not be available when it’s time for you to renew.
  4. Know Exactly What You Need – Discounted CEU’s or low cost CEU’s may end up costing you more money in the long run. A 3-hour course on Alzheimer’s and Dementia patient care won’t satisfy the training requirements since it is an hour short. You’re then left needing to pay for and complete another course. It is also beneficial to discuss with the referral department the types of cases they get the most. If you can, seek out trainings on those areas. It will identify you as skilled in those areas and you may be creating more job opportunities for yourself, thus increasing your income potential!
